Job Posting – Highway Equipment Mechanic/Operator

The Town of Wilmington is seeking a full-time Highway Equipment Mechanic/Operator to join our Highway Department. This hybrid position emphasizes mechanical maintenance and repair of municipal vehicles and equipment (60%) and also includes highway operations and laborer work (40%).

Responsibilities include:

  • Diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulics, trucks, loaders, graders, plows, and related municipal equipment.
  • Perform welding, fabrication, and emergency field repairs.
  • Ordering parts, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Operating municipal trucks and heavy equipment for snow removal, road repair, drainage, and related highway work.
  • Performing manual labor tasks including shoveling, sign repair, flagging, and debris removal.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational/technical training preferred.
  • Five (5) years’ experience as a mechanic, or equivalent training/experience.
  • Valid Vermont CDL (Class A or B), or ability to obtain within 3 months.
  • Must provide and maintain own mechanic tools.
  • Ability to be on-call for emergencies, especially during winter.

Work Environment:
This position requires a combination of garage/shop work and outdoor fieldwork in all weather conditions. Overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays is required during storms or emergencies.

Compensation:
$25 – $31.74 per hour,  with benefits.

Requirements: U.S. citizen, minimum age of 21; must have a valid driver’s license; high school diploma (college degree preferred). Applicant must be able to perform all the essential functions involved with police duties. Police testing, including a physical fitness examination, polygraph, oral board, medical exam, fingerprint check and extensive background check will be required of applicants selected for hire. Preference shall be given to VT-certified officers (hiring bonus up to $7500 for eligible pre-certified officers).
